Single rooftop tent camping is a great option for solo travelers or couple who prefer a more mobile and convenient camping experience. The rooftop tents are of a high-quality suitable for the unpredictable weather changes. We mostly use the Tentco type of tents on this option as they are properly ventilated, insulated, and protected from the elements of harsh climatic conditions. They are also being spacious enough to accommodate 2 people comfortably.
The vehicles for single rooftop tent camping are suitable for all weather and we ensure their extra 4wd options are on point. We only use Land cruisers, from the Land Cruiser Prado TZ to the bigger Land cruiser V8/GX and the harder Land cruiser LX. They have a sturdy roof rack capable of supporting the weight of the tent and if you are looking for long-term rental see our rental rates and choose a 4×4 car of your choice.
Besides a spare tire and other emergency tools such as a jerk and spanner, axe and spades etc. our camping vehicles are equipped with other camping equipment that includes the following;
Bedding: ensure you have a comfortable sleeping setup. We provide 2 sleeping bags or blankets, 2 pillows, a mattress pad or sleeping mat in the tent and 2 bed sheets. Lighting lamp or torch to provide illumination at night in and outside the tent when camping in areas with limited or no electricity.
Cooking Equipment: We always assume you have to cook some meals on your own. We include a cooking gas stove and cooking utensils such as pots, pans, and utensils. These are accompanied by serving utensils including plates, bowls, cups, chopping boards and cutlery.
A 10-litter jerry can for Water Storage, a storage box for your non-perishable food items such as canned goods, dried fruits, nuts, granola bars, and other easy-to-prepare camping meals.
At an extra of $5, we can add an electronic fridge if you’re carrying perishable food items or beverages. Lastly, we include lightweight folding chairs and a portable camping table for comfortable dining and relaxation at your campsite after the day.
The land cruisers are designed for the rugged and gravel Ugandan roads. This does not imply that you will not face any hiccups. Since the roads are in a sorry state, you must be prepared for vehicle-related issues. Getting a tire puncture is normal and you don’t have to call for help from your rental operator.
You can simply fix it by replacing it with a spare tire which is given to you plus the toolbox at the start of your trip. If you don’t wish to go through the hassle of fixing a tire, you can always request help from the locals as they are always willing to give you a hand. Don’t forget to tip them at least 5$.
For unmanageable vehicle issues, most of us have a road assistance team that comes to the traveler’s rescue. The road hiccups, travelers normally face do not take away the excitement and delight from the trip, they are a learning experience. They even make you stronger and more determined to complete the self-drive in Uganda.
What is more enthralling about the car rental camping experience is the rooftop tents. The tents are comfortable and safe as they are furnished with small mattresses and sleeping bags.
Sleeping bags are very important especially at night when it gets cold. The rooftop tents are simple to set up and disassemble. The task can only take 5-10 minutes. You are also taught how to set the tent up during the car pick-up.
Uganda is an ideal destination for camping with its relatively hot climate. From the Savannah parks to the forest ones, all tourist destinations have lots of campsites. Most of the campsites around the national parks offer basic amenities while a few are affiliated with luxury lodges.
However, you don’t have to worry; all campsites in Uganda have regular facilities to host guests for example flush toilets and showers. Most of these establishments are powered by solar energy enabling guests to charge their electronics and also for lighting. Within their premises, a bar and a restaurant are available.
Wireless internet is unavailable and tourists are advised to purchase local sim cards or a MIFI from a local network provider to get connected to the internet. All in all, the camping experience in Uganda is adventurous and satisfying because the campsites are neat, secure, and accommodating.
What makes camping in Uganda such an interesting and extraordinary venture is that it brings you closer to nature and wildlife. The franticness of most campsites makes the experience a true adventure.
Rooftop tent camping in Uganda has become such a highly demanded adventure; it is wise to book your 4×4 jeep earlier, like a month before your safari. This is very significant especially when you take up your trip in high season (June- October) and wish to stay in popular national parks like Sipi, Kidepo, Murchison Falls National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, Mgahinga, Lake Bunyonyi and Lake Mburo. More so if you want to extend your self-drive to Rwanda we can easily provide you with all necessary documents that allows the car to cross border to Kigali and then visit to the interesting safari destinations in Rwanda.
The travel distance between Uganda’s different tourist destinations is long; you have to be ready for long drives. The highways are well paved but the remote ones are gravel and bumpy, making the driving so challenging, especially on a wet day. We recommend hiring a 4×4 vehicle and taking sporadic breaks or stopovers to keep your body and brain fresh.
The drives can be 7 hours or more but there are different local towns to stop over to mix and mingle with the locals and buy some snacks, drinks, and muchomo. There are also peripheral attractions to enjoy along the roads such as cultural and historical sites and monuments and geographical features. Due to the numerous stopovers made that keep you engaged the distance seems to be short.
You have to come with some jungle and safari items to make your camping experience an exciting one. You should pack things like a camera, binoculars, insecticides, antibiotics, first aid kit, sunglasses, cap, scuff, towel, sponge, toilets, soap, deodorants, face mask, sanitizer, torch, jungle boots, snacks, drinking, and enough clothes.
